R'lyeh is supposed to have non-Euclidean geometry, which is somewhat difficult to convey in two (or even three!) dimensions. The artist who's best known for approximating it is M.C.Escher. While it's mainly just a set of optical illusions, the result best conveys the otherworldy feel R'lyeh is supposed to have.
